Ten minutes after you eat is a glucose tool, not a personality

Information, not a consult ( disclaimer).

The most useful thing I did for afternoon sleepiness was not a nootropic. It was standing up after lunch and walking around the block like I had forgotten something in the car. Ten minutes. Sometimes twelve because a light was red. The meal was the same sandwich. The 3pm slump got quieter.

Postprandial means after you eat. Glucose in the blood rises. In people without diabetes it still rises. In people with insulin resistance it rises more and hangs around. Muscles that are actually using glucose while that wave is coming in are a mechanical trick older than continuous monitors.

This is not medical advice to throw away metformin. If you have diabetes, you already have a person who owns that decision. A walk can still be part of the day. It does not get to rewrite the prescription.

What the studies actually did

Reynolds and colleagues in New Zealand (Diabetologia, 2016, if you want the famous “short walks after meals” paper) had people with type 2 diabetes walk for 10 minutes after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, versus walking the same total time in one lump. The after-meal pattern did more for the postprandial peaks, especially after dinner, which is when a lot of men sit in a hole of sofa and screen.

There is a pile of smaller work on interrupting sitting, on “exercise snacks,” on walking versus standing. Standing is not nothing. Walking is more. I do not need a hierarchy of biohacks. I need a thing I will still do when it rains.

DiPietro and other sitting researchers have been saying for years that long unbroken sitting is its own problem. You can be a gym person at 7am and a corpse at 2pm. The 7am session does not fully launder the afternoon.

I am careful with CGM culture. A consumer glucose monitor is a toy until someone taught you what a spike even means for you. Plenty of healthy people spike after white rice. The walk still makes sense as a habit even if you never buy a sensor. If you did buy a sensor, do not turn dinner into a video game. That way lies anxiety and a drawer of unused electrodes.

Shoes by the door next to a cleared dinner plate

How I run it without turning into a monk

I set a cheap timer for 10 minutes when the plate is in the sink. I walk outside if the weather is not a character in a novel. If it is, I walk stairs or a hallway. I do not need zone 2 math. Conversation pace. If I am gasping, I am doing a different workout and I should have worn different shoes.

After a huge meal I sometimes go 15. After a small breakfast I still go, because the habit is the point. I do not walk after every apple. I walk after the meals that used to put me in a chair with a laptop on my sternum.

Resistance training still matters more for keeping muscle. This walk does not replace the hinge or zone 2. It patches the hole between meals and the couch. Eight thousand steps is a daily volume target. This is a timing trick. You can have both. You can also have neither and still be a person. I am describing what moved my afternoons.

Alcohol with dinner is a special case. Walking does not make two drinks into zero drinks. See the sleep piece. I still walk. I do not pretend the walk is a liver.

A log that was not cinematic

For 21 weekdays I walked after lunch. I did not change breakfast. Afternoon caffeine stayed at my usual cutoff. I wrote down whether I wanted a nap at 3. Nights 1 to 4 I still wanted the nap. Then it got boring, which is success. Continuous glucose was not involved. I used a feeling and a notebook like a peasant.

When I stopped for a conference week of sitting and pastries, the slump came back in two days. That is either glucose or the fact that conferences are fluorescent punishment. Probably both.

People with neuropathy, foot ulcers, unstable angina, or a surgeon’s instruction not to walk do not get this protocol from me. They get their clinician.

Desk jobs and the lie of the standing desk

I like standing desks. I also see men stand still for three hours and call it training. Stillness is stillness. The after-meal walk is movement. If you can only steal six minutes, steal six. Reynolds used ten because that is what they tested, not because nine is cursed.

Meetings that eat lunch are a design problem. I have eaten in the meeting and walked after. I have also skipped the walk and paid for it. I am not going to moralize a calendar.

Rain, offices, and other excuses that are sometimes real

I keep a pair of ugly shoes at work. The walk is a loop around the building or two flights, not a pilgrimage. Security in some offices hates loitering. Then I walk the car park once. If the only option is a treadmill desk, I set ten minutes and actually step, which is rarer than LinkedIn implies.

After a heavy dinner I am slower. That is allowed. After a liquid “lunch” that was an espresso and a protein bar, I still walk, because the habit is the point and the bar still had carbohydrate.

I do not stack a hard interval session on top of a huge meal unless I enjoy feeling sick. The after-meal walk is easy on purpose. Save the hard stuff for a time you chose, not for the glucose wave.

People on insulin or sulfonylureas can go low if they add movement without a plan. That is why this is not a tweet that says “just walk it off.” If you use those drugs, the clinician owns the timing. I will not freelance your hypoglycemia.

Common questions

Fasted walking instead? Fine for some goals. Different experiment. This piece is about the window after food.

Can I do it on a treadmill at a desk? If you actually walk, yes. If you fidget at 0.8 km/h while answering Slack, you found a new way to sit.

Does protein at the meal replace the walk? Protein helps satiety and muscle. It is not a 10-minute stroll. Eat protein anyway. See our protein piece if you want grams.

CGM says I spiked anyway. Welcome to being a mammal who ate starch. Look at the height and the hang time across weeks, or ignore the sensor if it is making you mean.

Dinner at 9pm? Walk anyway if you can do it safely in your neighborhood. Then go to bed. Do not add a 45-minute training session at 9:40 and act shocked about sleep.

Prediabetes? This is one of the least stupid habits you can add while you wait for a proper plan. It is not the plan.
